It’s rare that we just have one feeling about something.
It’s perfectly normal to have a range of feelings, some of which may even contradict each other.
To explore their diversity of emotions, present the bag of feelings to a pupil and ask them to draw what feelings are in their bag.
They can use different colours and split the bag up in various ways to show how large, small, or certain feelings are.
The Bag of Feelings technique is versatile, making it suitable for general check-ins and specific events a young person may be anxious about, such as a school trip.
For example, through this method, the pupil may recognise that, though they are feeling anxious, there is a bit of them feeling excited.
We can then explore what it would take to reduce or amplify certain feelings, leading to other explorations around whether there are times when a particular feeling is more dominant.
